Pine Creek Bird Life

Pine Creek is unique for its varied birdlife. The town is on the cusp of the temperate and tropical zones, so people travel from all over the world to see the biggest variety of birdlife in one place in the Northern Territory.

The Pine Creek's birds list can be obtained for $5 including postage. Contact the council for more information.

The Hooded Parrot and Northern Rosella can be found most mornings in the bogga young memorial park opposite the Pine Creek Hotel around 7.45am, then the colony of approximately 40 fly up to the mine lookout. These birds roost on the right hand side of Chinatown Road about 1/3 of the way along to the rubbish dump.

Hooded Parrots can sometimes be seen in the cemetery and around the junction of the Stuart and Kakadu highways.

A great place for birdwatching is around and behind the sewage ponds in the late afternoon from around 4.45pm.

The Gouldian Finches which roost in the escarpment along the Umbrawarra Gorge Road are a bit harder to spot even though there is quite a large colony in the area. Try along the cemetery road on the right near the overhead powerlines, in the cemetery itself, or follow the fenceline to the right at the cemetery gates, or behind the sewage ponds. In the middle of the day they have even been sighted in small numbers in the water gardens in the centre of town.

The Hooded Parrot and Gouldian Finch were painted by Denise Goodfellow and used on our website with her kind permission.
